Can I have the new generation of Smart Meters (SMETS 2)?
SMETS 2 is the upgraded version of the traditional SMETS 1 meter that most smart customers had up until March 2019. PFP Energy will always install a SMETS 2 meter when we complete a Smart Install. SMETS 2 meters are still new to suppliers and there has been a lot of care around installing these meters to ensure that the technology is fully functioning with all the supporting background data.
What is the difference between a SMETS 1 Meter and a SMETS 2 Meter?
The main difference between the two meters is that with a SMETS 2 meter you can switch supplier without losing your smart ability. This is all managed by the Data Communications Company (DCC).
How do Smart Meters work?
Smart Meters don’t need an internet connection to communicate with the supplier. They work by using two wireless networks which we call the Home Area Network (HAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN), similar to the ones used by mobile phones. Both of these networks are secure methods of communication between the meters devices and the supporting supplier.
Is a Smart Meter secure and private?
When Smart Meters need to communicate with a supplier, they use the Wide Area Network. This is a secure network that is supported by the Data Communications Company (DCC) which is overseen by the energy regulator, Ofgem. The DCC are governed by very strict regulations to ensure that all Smart Meter data is kept private and secure.

Having a Smart meter is not mandatory. However, we are offering Smart meters free of charge to all customers as part of the government’s Smart meter roll out programme. Having a Smart meter brings many benefits including even clearer, immediate understanding about your energy consumption that in turn helps you to understand which behaviours may be costing you the most. Alongside saving on your bills, reducing your usage will have a positive effect on your carbon footprint so you’ll be helping the planet too.
